Do not measure a person.  Compare to a currently fitting shirt: 

* Take a well fitting BUTTON DOWN SHIRT* Use a tape measure* Lay the shirt down flat, on the back side* Measure from side to side, going across aprox 1/2″ under the arm pit area.
